If a child does not attend school and is playing truant on a regular basis, there are consequences not only for the child but also for the parents of the child. It is parents legal rights to ensure a child attends school every day of term, unless other arrangements are made with the school for special reasons. If a child is absent for a period of time from a school, the parents can actually be fined for this if there is no reasonable explanation as to why the child has not been there. If the child is absent for medical reasons, they should get a note to cover the period of sickness and the school should get this so that they can set some homework for the child to keep them involved in what is happening during their absence and the child can at least keep up with some work at home. In some cases, the child may play truant and the parents may not know of this so it is the school's responsibility to inform the parents of the situation.
